Ben Hogan was born in Montrose, Colorado on June 16, 1911. He lived on his family's ranch until the age of sixteen, when he moved to San Antonio, Texas to play golf. Hogan began playing on two-man teams with George Sargent in the 1930s and later played with Walter Hagen. In 1947, Hogan won his first major championship when he won the Masters Tournament. From then on, Hogan went on to win numerous tournaments including The Open Championship three times (1951, 1954 and 1960) and the U.S.
Open in 1948 and 1951. He also won nine PGA Championships. A turning point in Hogan's life was his appearance before the LPGA Tour Committee at their annual meeting in 1955, during which he told of his struggles to become a professional golfer.
At the conclusion of his presentation he said: "If I can do it why can't you?"
